You're Here (Hooray!)

Concept by Orla Collier
Co-created and performed with Magdalena Górnikiewicz

Commissioned by Word of Warning

Length: 90 minutes (durational)

You're Here (Hooray!) is a duet which explores touch and attachment. Both performers wriggle around each other, intertwined and knotting themselves up, both motivated by their own need for touch – perhaps at the expense of the other.

In the space is a bag of belts, a basket of confetti, and a sign which states, 'When the performers are still, please shower them with confetti'.

At any point, the performers have the option to reach into bag of belts, and attach themselves to the other performer. Once they are attached, they become still. In this intimate moment, the audience are invited to shower them with confetti, celebrating the attachment and revealing the inevitable chaos and messiness that comes with it.

You're Here (Hooray! was created for and performed at Haphazard 23 at Z-Arts, produced by Word of Warning (and never forgotten for the mess it created!)

Some of the themes in the work was later explored in two creative lab sessions at Lancaster Dance Artists Pro class at Lancaster University. These sessions involved guided group improvisations using one long roll of paper. As the group interacted with the paper, Orla offered unusual instructions and scenarios for the group to interpret, with an emphasis on individual autonomy and building your character within the group, an awareness of the group's dynamics, and reflecting on what is happening/has happened through writing on the paper or responding physically.

See below for images of the aftermath of these sessions and the performance at Haphazard.
